Justine Elliott, Minister for Ageing, today visited our head office / Tamworth respite house to announce a $4M funding round, including a grant of $12,000 to SOS.

SOS staff and clients were on hand for the minister's announcement and tour of the facilities.

Ms Shona Mowle, has been appointed to the position of Marketing & Administration officer, based at the Gold Coast.

Shona was previously at our Moree & Brisbane offices. Effective immediately she will be responsible for marketing, customer relations, field support & management for northern NSW, Gold Coast, Brisbane and south east Queensland.

An Australian Government Initiative funds Respite Services for New England

As part of the Australian Government’s approach to enhancing the community care system through “ A New Strategy for Community Care – The Way Forward”. The San Souci Respite Home in Tamworth has received funding to offer Respite Services to carers of older Australians including carers of people with dementia and challenging behaviours.

This three-year program is part of a government initiative to achieve enhanced quality of life for carers of older people and people with moderate, severe or profound disabilities through the National Respite for Carers Program.

The San Souci Community Respite Home in Tamworth, a warm, comfortable three bedroom home with full disabled access and staffed by qualified staff from the SOS Nursing & Home Care Service will provide respite services to the large regional communities and to the rural families of New England.

The funding package allows for support to carers in the form of caring, cost effective, overnight respite for their dependant for a period of up to 5 consecutive nights and includes transport to and from the respite home within the community, to and from day respite programs for daytime activities and meals.

The program is available for up to 25 nights a year per carer. It is designed to be flexible and able to be tailored to each carer’s specific needs. The staff are qualified professionals who have had extensive experience in caring for people with dementia or challenging behaviours.

The reality of an aging population means there are increasing challenges for families who have responsibility for the care of a frail aged dependant family member. These carers provide a significant service to the community not only in providing a high level of quality, cost effective care but also in allowing people to have a choice in the management of their condition. It is hoped this regional offer of respite care will give carers time to rest and achieve some of the things that full time caring makes impossible. This could be attending to their own health needs or just having time to visit family or friends for a meal or a chat.

Our new Respite Home on the Central Coast opened for business in today.

The new home has a spacious, open-plan design and currently accommodates up to three clients. With plenty of space and an enclosed garden area, it offers a relaxing and secure environment.

As with our other respite homes, Central Coast offers 24 hour, 7 day personalised care, catering for day respites, overnight or emergency care. Please be aware this property currently offers respite care to ambulant clients only.

The SOS Respite Home in Glen Innes opened for business in October 2003.

At long last, the builders are nearly finished! Newly completed work includes a fully featured disabled bathroom, new laundry facilities, new hot water services, and an updated kitchen.

The self-contained apartment has a new kitchen and bathroom, incorporating disabled facilities and ramps allow easy access. This is ideal for travellers who need private or disabled facilities that are difficult to find in local motels.
